We’re happy to announce that Snøhetta has won the invited competition for a 9.000 square meters mixed-use development in Gießen, Germany. Situated on a former industrial site in the Heyligenstaedt area, the proposal focuses on the diverse uses, history and characteristics of the public spaces in the development of the new urban quarter. The design concepts of the four different courtyard situations take the adjacent uses into consideration and define the architecture of the buildings.
These open spaces feature a tranquil green oasis as well as a lively urban space with meeting points, event space, café terraces and restaurant gardens. An attractive open space for sports activities serves as atrium, and enhances the exposure to natural light in the proposed pool and fitness areas. The designs and materials of the three- and four-story buildings are inspired by the courtyards, with green roofs and facades that will enhance the site’s microclimate. The roofs will be partly covered with PV panels for local energy production, and on-site materials will be reused.
In the long-term vision for the Heyligenstaedt area, the streetscape south of the area is converted into an attractive linear urban square that connects to potential future developments.
